The party is 30 °C...
Just about surviving in the heatwave, with a glass of wine in hand...
Hello friends,
It’s getting boring talking about how hot it is, but man it really is. We’re settling into Windsor, and have happily avoided all of the pomp and circumstance this week - accidentally rather than intentionally. Copious amounts of ice tea is being consumed, and I tried Zumba… not for me!
I’ve enjoyed writing these five things, and working on some longer form pieces - hopefully they’ll be with you soon!
On to this week’s five things…
In the wake of the new Downton Abbey film trailer dropping, I’ve been rewatching the tv series, and I’d forgotten about Maggie Smith’s zingers. She has the most excellent library of one liners. Today did an excellent round up here. We’re making plans to visit Highclere this summer as it’s less than an hours drive from here - I’ll be sure to post photos on Instagram.
Whilst most of my cookery equipment is in storage (we’re sort of between houses - it’s a long story!), I’ve started posting about wine here. If you, like me, love the glasses I’ve been using, they’re back on Marks and Spencer. I got a set for my dad for Father’s Day after he saw them (and tried to pinch mine!).
Nicola Lamb has a great baking-focused newsletter, Kitchen Projects, she regularly breaks down an ingredient, testing it lots of ways and reporting back. It’s part science lesson, part cooking lesson, part cheat sheet. The latest edition was all about stabilising whipped cream (sadly it was all full-fat dairy) - you can read it here.
If you love chicken wine, or spicy margs, and want to support independent designers, I can whole heartedly recommend these tees from Everpress. Next on my list is this one for Coco and really underlining my love of margs…
After work drinks, drinks with friends, or lazy summer afternoons are all best spent in a great wine bar, with an even better by the glass list. One of my favourite bars for this is Unwined on Lower Marsh. It’s super handy as its’ right by Waterloo - so perfect for everyone getting home but far enough away that you don’t feel like you’re in a soulless train station. Their list at the moment is cracking, with a great German Riesling (as recommended by my friend S), Lost in a Field ‘Frolic’ by the glass (a stellar fresh English pet nat) and a zingy bacchus from English vineyard New Hall.
We’re entering birthday season in my family, so there will be tales and recommendations soon.
Remember your SPF!
C&C x
